Attacks on McCain

Watch CBS Videos Online

Here is video of John McCain talking with CBS News' Katie Couric today. He discussed the pick of Joe Biden to be Barack Obama's running mate, and also answered questions on the issue of how many houses he owns. McCain very effectively explains that he is grateful for the success and blessings he has received from this great nation. He also shared that he knows what it is to "not have a home" and "not have a kitchen table."

Rather than not being able to sympathize with those in need and want in America, John McCain's experience uniquely positions him to identify with those Americans who are suffering. He knows what it is to suffer and be in need.

Hot Air.com has the story tonight that it turns out John McCain does not own any homes! The Obama Campaign has been hammering McCain for hesitating when asked how many homes he and Mrs. McCain own. He did not immediately give an answer, but said he would get the information to the questioner.

Perhaps McCain hesitated because he does not own any homes in his name. They are all owned in the name of his wife, Cindy, and her trust. In other words - McCain has spent a lot of time serving the nation in Washington D.C., and the financial details of his wife's trust are not uppermost in his mind. They keep finances separate to avoid any appearance of conflict of interest for Sen. McCain. Hot Air.com quotes Politico, who buried the significant detail that McCain himself owns none of the homes with a matter-of-fact sentence in the middle of the quote below:

John McCain’s family owns at least eight properties — not the seven Democrats are alleging or the four McCain’s staff identified — according to a Politico analysis of property and tax records, as well as interviews.

The presumptive Republican nominee, though, may have some wiggle room in explaining why he couldn’t immediately provide an answer when asked by Politico how many houses he and his wife, Cindy, own. Sen. McCain himself does not own any of the properties. They’re all owned by Cindy McCain, her dependent children and the trusts and companies they control. …

Politico’s analysis of the McCain records found that five of the eight properties were purchased between the summer of 2004 and this February, for a total of $11 million. And the analysis found that the McCains hired additional household help in 2007.

The five new properties are all condominiums, and they include three in Phoenix — one of which became the couple’s primary Phoenix residence after a Cindy McCain family trust in 2006 sold for $3.2 million the house in which they raised their children — and a pair outside San Diego.

Here is Mike Huckabee defending John McCain against the pathetic attacks by the Obama campaign that McCain is "confused" on Iraq. Huckabee says once McCain gets Obama on stage for a debate, he will show that he (McCain) is not the confused one.

Here is a video report from NBC News on John McCain's hopes for wrapping up the nomination tomorrow, as well as the endorsements he received from GOP Governors today. The report also mentions the Gloria Steinem dissing of McCain's POW service.

Aging Feminist Gloria Steinem denigrated Sen. John McCain's service as a Prisoner of War (POW) in a speech she made over the weekend. The vile attack came as she spoke in behalf of Sen. Hillary Clinton ahead of the pivotal March 4 primaries. Steinem also denigrated McCain's military training saying about Hillary Clinton, "I am so grateful that she [Clinton] hasn’t been trained to kill anybody." Here is part of the New York Observer report:

Feminist icon Gloria Steinem took to the stump on Hillary Clinton’s behalf here last night and quickly proved that she has lost none of her taste for provocation.

From the stage, the 73-year-old seemed to denigrate the importance of John McCain’s time as a prisoner of war in Vietnam. In an interview with The Observer afterward, she suggested that Barack Obama benefits—and Clinton suffers—because Americans view racism more seriously than sexism.

Steinem raised McCain’s Vietnam imprisonment as she sought to highlight an alleged gender-based media bias against Clinton.

“Suppose John McCain had been Joan McCain and Joan McCain had got captured, shot down and been a POW for eight years. [The media would ask], ‘What did you do wrong to get captured? What terrible things did you do while you were there as a captive for eight years?’” Steinem said, to laughter from the audience.

McCain was, in fact, a prisoner of war for around five and a half years, during which time he was tortured repeatedly. Referring to his time in captivity, Steinem said with bewilderment, “I mean, hello? This is supposed to be a qualification to be president? I don’t think so.”

Steinem’s broader argument was that the media and the political world are too admiring of militarism in all its guises.

“I am so grateful that she [Clinton] hasn’t been trained to kill anybody. And she probably didn’t even play war games as a kid. It’s a great relief from Bush in his jump suit and from Kerry saluting.”

To The Observer, Steinem insisted that “from George Washington to Jack Kennedy and PT-109 we have behaved as if killing people is a qualification for ruling people.”

Shameful. Is this what the Democratic Party has come to?
