Dobson shifts positions, may endorse McCain
By ERIC GORSKI

Conservative Christian leader James Dobson has softened his stance against Republican presidential hopeful John McCain, saying he could reverse his position and endorse the Arizona senator despite serious misgivings.

"I never thought I would hear myself saying this," Dobson said in a radio broadcast to air Monday. "... While I am not endorsing Senator John McCain, the possibility is there that I might."

Dobson and other evangelical leaders unimpressed by McCain increasingly are taking a lesser-of-two-evils approach to the 2008 race. Dobson and his guest, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary president Albert Mohler, spend most of the pretaped Focus on the Family radio program criticizing Democratic candidate Barack Obama, getting to McCain at the very end.

In an advance copy provided to The Associated Press, Dobson said that while neither candidate is consistent with his views, McCain's positions are closer by a wide margin.  read more »

As the conservative right moves towards McCain, the "Middle" is getting smaller as the election draws near. There are only so many blocks of votes that one can pick from to build a victory in November.

Many voting blocks are still up for grabs and Obama seems to be scrambling to attract those with the most numbers. Problem is, McCain (an experienced politican) continues to beat him to it. Based on his recent flip flops, Obama seems to be a follower rather than a leader and the middle is starting to sense it.

Now that McCain seems to be winning over the Right, the middle seems to be the most logical target.

The "Middle" is finally starting to choose sides and McCain is at least +1 at this point as Obama seems to have some catching up to do. This is a victory for McCain.

Update: Ap's Liz Sadoti writes about the battle for the "middle.

Video: Governor Pawlenty on McCain’s Relationship with Evangelicals
June 30, 2008

Minnesota Governor and Vice-Presidential shortlist candidate Tim Pawlenty entered The Brody File earlier this morning. We’ll be moving video excerpts throughout the afternoon. In the clip above, Pawlenty talks about how McCain still has some work to do with his Evangelical Christian outreach. Watch above and read the transcription below.

Governor Tim Pawlenty : "John McCain is a person of faith and he is a committed Christian and he is somebody that I think is probably less comfortable being overt about that than perhaps some others might be but his value system and his belief in Christ I think is something that is part of who he is as a person and I think he is somebody who would be well received by Christian leaders and Evangelical leaders and I just want to encourage the McCain campaign to make that effort and to reach out and they are but I think there are a lot of Christian leaders, evangelical leaders who haven’t yet been contacted or who haven’t been part of meetings who are feeling perhaps, are they going to reach out to me and at a minimum we want to make sure that he is speaking on issues of concern to them and I think you’ll see perhaps more of that in the summer and fall."  read more »
