Disturbingly, there is an emerging consensus among the Democrat-led United States Congressional leadership that the war in Iraq is "lost." The most recent example that this thesis has worked its way into official party talking points was offered by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, the Nevada Democrat, who pointedly stated last month that "...this war is lost and the surge is not accomplishing anything...."

Setting the obvious contrarian politics aside, could there be a more defeatist, demoralizing and undermining statement at this time?

With approximately 3,000 lives--some of America's finest men and women--now having been sacrificed for the purpose of this mission in Iraq and another quarter million currently deployed there in harm's way, calling the Iraq War "lost" is about the greatest disservice a public official can offer both those fighting today and the legacy of the 3,000 fallen. Does this Congress really need to be reminded: Their mission is a hugely laudable one, not a lost cause.  read more »

Former President George H. W. Bush (Bush 41) called criticism of John McCain's conservatism "absurd," following his endorsement of John McCain today in Houston, Texas. Here is an NBC Nightly News report on the endorsement, which includes video of Bush making that statement. It also includes reaction by Mike Huckabee to Bush's veiled suggestion that it can be difficult for a losing candidate to "see the handwriting on the wall" and drop out. Let's say Huckabeee did not accept the hint graciously!

HOUSTON -- Sen. John McCain will pick up a big endorsement Monday at Hobby Airport.

Former President George H.W. Bush will back the candidate for president.

In a recent poll, McCain was leading Mike Huckabee by only four points in Texas, so his campaign hopes this endorsement will be huge.

"I hope so, because former President Bush is one of the most respected people in our party," McCain said.

Here is a discussion with Todd Harris and Joe Watkins about how the Bush 41 endorsement may help John McCain, and whether Mike Huckabee should get out of the GOP race:

From the LA Times

WASHINGTON -- Republican officials say Former President George H.W. Bush will endorse John McCain in Texas on Monday.

The endorsement is seen as another sign of McCain's tightening grip on the Republican presidential nomination. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because the formal announcement is next week.

The Arizona senator has been working to solidify his support from the Republican base. The nod from the former president and patriarch of the Bush family will certainly help.
