Jeremiah Wright

Stanley Kurtz is out with a devastating piece in the May 19 issue of The Weekly Standard in which he proves it is impossible that Barack Obama is telling the truth about what he knew of Rev. Jeremiah Wright's radical anti-American philosophy. Obama has acted as if he is shocked by what Jeremiah Wright said about the United States, and how he acted at The National Press Club last month. Yet, Kurtz proves beyond any reasonable doubt that Obama had to know for years and years of Wright's radical views and felt comfortable enough with those views to remain in the church - even to this day. Here is the first part of Kurtz's article:

To the question of the moment--What did Barack Obama know and when did he know it?--I answer, Obama knew everything, and he's known it for ages. Far from succumbing to surprise and shock after Jeremiah Wright's disastrous performance at the National Press Club, Barack Obama must have long been aware of his pastor's political radicalism. A careful reading of nearly a year's worth of Trumpet Newsmagazine, Wright's glossy national "lifestyle magazine for the socially conscious," makes it next to impossible to conclude otherwise.

Wright founded Trumpet Newsmagazine in 1982 as a "church newspaper"--primarily for his own congregation, one gathers--to "preach a message of social justice to those who might not hear it in worship service." So Obama's presence at sermons is not the only measure of his knowledge of Wright's views. Glance through even a single issue of Trumpet, and Wright's radical politics are everywhere--in the pictures, the headlines, the highlighted quotations, and above all in the articles themselves. It seems inconceivable that, in 20 years, Obama would never have picked up a copy of Trumpet. In fact, Obama himself graced the cover at least once (although efforts to obtain that issue from the publisher or Obama's interview with the magazine from his campaign were unsuccessful).  read more »

Here is a video that summarizes in five minutes the truth concerning the relationship between Barack Obama and Rev. Jeremiah Wright. This issue will not -- indeed, must not go away, because it reveals so much about the left-wing ideology and character of the man who is on his way to becoming the Democratic nominee for President.

Michael Barone has written an outstanding article that reveals the sizeable damage done to the candidacy of Barack Obama by his longtime relationship with Jeremiah Wright:

Is the bottom falling out for Barack Obama? It's too early to say that, but there are some disturbing signs. On the positive side, superdelegates still are breaking his way. Rep. Baron Hill, whose southern Indiana district almost certainly will vote for Hillary Clinton, came out for Obama. So did fellow Hoosier Joe Andrew, who previously endorsed Clinton and who was named Democratic national chairman by Bill Clinton in the 1990s. (James Carville may have another name for him.) Obama is still well ahead among delegates chosen in primaries and caucuses, and he is not very far behind in superdelegates, either.

But what about the voters? Here there are some ominous signs. The latest Fox News poll, conducted after the Rev. Jeremiah Wright's appearance at the National Press Club, showed Obama's favorable/unfavorables at 63 to 27 percent among Democrats, compared to Hillary Clinton's 73 to 22 percent. Suddenly she's not the only one with high negatives. And 36 percent of Democrats say they would be disinclined to vote for Obama because of his longtime relationship with his former pastor. There's more bad news in The Pew Research Center poll of Democrats. Obama's national lead among Democrats is down from 49 to 39 percent to a statistically insignificant 47 to 45 percent.  read more »

In the event anyone was tempted to believe Barack Obama's statement today that the Jeremiah Wright he saw at the National Press Club yesterday is "not the Jeremiah Wright I met 20 years ago," - think again!

Take a look at this video interview Greta Van Susteren did tonight with a pastor Myron Cloyd from Houston, Texas, who has known Jeremiah Wright for 25 years. Two key points stand out in this interview, and both destroy Obama's assertion that Jeremiah Wright has somehow "changed" of late:

1. At the 3:23 mark of the video, the pastor says he felt Obama should have distanced himself from Wright "2-3 years ago," because there was "no way who Rev. Wright is and always has been" was not going to be a problem for Obama.

2. Toward the end of the interview at the :46 second remaining mark, the pastor says that what Obama called a "spectacle" yesterday at the National Press Club is what Jeremiah Wright has been doing all over the country for years. It was the same Jeremiah Wright he has heard for years.

Both of these statements just destroy the fraud Barack Obama is now desperately trying to pass off to the American people -- that he somehow did not know that Wright was an America-hating radical. Pathetically, many in the media are already trying to make the Wright matter go away because they want to save Obama's candidacy.

What Obama did today is exactly what Jeremiah Wright said yesterday - it was the move of a crass politician who is trying to save his own skin. Obama has at least passively approved of the views and preaching of Jeremiah Wright for 20 years, and now is trying to make America believe he never knew what Wright stood for. If a pastor friend of Wright says Wright is today what he has been for many years, don't you think a 20-year member of Wright's church would know what he is? Of course he would! That truth will not conveniently go away for Barack Obama.

If you had to wonder whether the Jeremiah Wright mess is a true disaster for Barack Obama or not, take a look at the article posted by Dana Milbank at the Washington Post Blog ( a portion is quoted below). Milbank and the Washington Post are not exactly on the payroll of the Republican National Committee! We learn from Milbank's article that Jeremiah Wright was accompanied at the National Press Club today by bodyguards provided by Nation of Islam Leader Louis Farrakhan, whom Wright defended during the press conference:

The Rev. Jeremiah Wright, explaining this morning why he had waited so long before breaking his silence about his incendiary sermons, offered a paraphrase from Proverbs: "It is better to be quiet and be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt."

Barack Obama's pastor would have been wise to continue to heed that wisdom.

Should it become necessary in the months from now to identify the moment that doomed Obama's presidential aspirations, attention is likely to focus on the hour between nine and ten this morning at the National Press Club. It was then that Wright, Obama's longtime pastor, reignited a controversy about race from which Obama had only recently recovered - and added lighter fuel.

Speaking before an audience that included Marion Barry, Cornel West, Malik Zulu Shabazz of the New Black Panther Party and Nation of Islam official Jamil Muhammad, Wright praised Louis Farrakhan, defended the view that Zionism is racism, accused the United States of terrorism, repeated his view that the government created the AIDS virus to cause the genocide of racial minorities, stood by other past remarks ("God damn America") and held himself out as a spokesman for the black church in America.  read more »

We will probably be using this video a lot between now and November.

Let there be no ambiguity - Barack Obama said on Fox News Sunday, April 27, 2008, that the issue of his longtime pastor's statements, Rev. Jeremiah Wright, is a "legitimate political issue." Therefore, in the months to come, when Obama's long relationship to his radical pastor is called into question, the Obama campaign cannot legitimately claim it is out of bounds to bring up Rev. Wright. Obama, with his own mouth, pronounced his relationship with Wright "a legitimate political issue." He, and his willing accomplices in the liberal media, may have to be reminded of that frequently in the coming General Election.

Here is Fox News' footage of John McCain's response to the Jeremia Wright controversy and also McCain's response to Obama saying,"The fact that he[Wright]is my former pastor, I believe that makes it a legitimate political issue."

McCain says that some of Wright's statements are,"Beyond Belief."

Jim Geraghty at The Campaign Spot, has written an outstanding post that says Rev. Jeremiah Wright "may have just sunk Obama's Campaign." He is analyzing the impact of Wright's media blitz since last Friday, which culminated in his series of shocking and bizarre statements at the National Press Club today:

Jeremiah Wright May Have Just Sunk Obama's Campaign

The Obama campaign is off the rails.

The entire tone of the race changed the moment we saw the first fiery Wright sermon. The sight of those sermons triggered a question in a lot of voters' minds: How do you get the moderate-sounding, pleasant, agreeable student Barack Obama from an angry, divisive, radical, way-out-of-the-mainstream teacher like Jeremiah Wright? The sermons weren't quite a deal-breaker, but many Obama supporters, leaners, and undecideds were asking... how did Obama choose this man as a mentor? How could he possibly not know that his mentor had these attitudes? And does Obama agree with any of Wright's inflammatory statements?  read more »

Here is video of today's appearance by Rev. Jeremiah Wright - Barack Obama's longtime pastor and spiritual adviser - at the National Press Club in Washington D.C. The first 25-26 minutes is a speech by Wright in which he talks a lot about the "Black Church Tradition," and says that the controversy about his remarks is not an attack on him, but an attack on the "Black Church."

At the 26:53 mark of the video, he begins to answer questions, the first one being about his blaming of America for 9-11. He only reinforced that stance by saying a nation cannot "do terrorism" to others and not expect to receive terrorism in return.

The Q & A period is filled with shocking statements by Wright, who is clearly a self-absorbed egomaniac who is relishing the national spotlight. We can only hope he will continue to hold court and share his bizarre views regularly from now to November, because as he does the questions grow as to how Barack Obama could allow himself and his family to be so closely associated with such a man and his racist radical views. Obama has said the statements of Jeremiah Wright constitute a "legitimate political issue." With every appearance, Wright reveals himself to be a shocking radical who gives voice to the blame America first crowd who so despises the history of our great nation. For Obama to have felt so comfortable with this man for so long speaks volumes about Barack Obama, his worldview, and where he would take America.

Sen. John McCain reacted to new comments by Barack Obama's longtime pastor, Jeremiah Wright, saying the comments are "beyond belief." McCain has worked very hard to not delve into the Wright mess, but with Wright's shocking comments, and Obama's statement that Wright is a "legitimate political issue," McCain has weighed in:

But McCain noted that Obama said on Sunday on Fox News that Wright was an issue, seemingly opening a door for McCain to connect the Democrat to his former pastor.

"I saw yesterday some additional comments that have been revealed by Pastor Wright, one of them comparing the United States Marine Corps with Roman Legionnaires who were responsible for the death of our Savior, I mean being involved in that. It's beyond belief..." McCain said.

"I can understand why Americans, when viewing these kinds of comments, are angry and upset," McCain said.
