Here is story posted at Newsmax.com that discusses John McCain's refusal to meet with Dr. James Dobson. Dobson is a powerful evangelical leader based in Colorado and is very well known in poilitical circles.
The Newsmax story quotes Bob Novak in several instances as in the following:
Noting that Dobson has indicated he can't support McCain for president, Novak writes that Dobson's opposition to McCain "reflects continued resistance to the prospective presidential nominee among Christian conservatives who are unhappy with McCain's current positions on stem-cell research, immigration and global warming, not to mention his past sponsorship of campaign-finance reform."
But conservatives are surprised that despite the differences between McCain and some key conservatives, he hasn't responded to their olive branches and sought meetings.
Novak is too kind. Dobson has not just said he could not support McCain for president. He has voiced that opinion in much stronger terms.
In a Worldnetdaily article back in January Dosbson said:
...Speaking as a private individual, I would not vote for John McCain under any circumstances...
He went on to say:
...That came from McCain, and the McCain Feingold Bill kept us from telling the truth right before elections … and there are a lot of other things. He's not in favor of traditional marriage, and I pray that we won't get stuck with him," Dobson said...
Why would McCain want to meet with someone who has made it clear that he could not give his support to McCain. It would be a waste of time. Dobson's followers know Dobson's opinion of McCain and their minds have been made up since January. I'm not saying they all agree with Dobson, I'm saying they know how HE feels about McCain.
