Sonny Perdue

Here is an interview with Sen. John McCain done last night, March 6, 2008, by Atlanta station WXIA-TV. Just click on the picture above to go to the interview. McCain is asked about his coming Vice-Presidential Choice and other issues such as tax cuts and containing pork barrel spending. Interestingly, McCain himself mentions the names of Gov. Bobby Jindal of Louisiana and J.C. Watts of Oklahoma in the discussion of Vice-Presidential possibilities. That's the first I have heard him do that.

Here is a local news report on the Atlanta fundraiser John McCain will attend the evening of March 6, 2008. Gov. Sonny Perdue of Georgia will also attend, and the report discusses speculation that Gov. Perdue could be a McCain Vice-Presidential choice.

The Hill.com has the rundown on a big day of endorsements for Sen. John McCain. He was endorsed today by no less than six GOP Governors:

Six GOP governors on Monday announced their endorsements of Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), whom Missisippi Gov. Haley Barbour described as “the man that can unite the Republican Party.”

Barbour and Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue announced their support for McCain at a Washington hotel, where they also said fellow GOP Govs. John Hoeven (N.D.), Bobby Jindal (La.), Linda Lingle (Hawaii) and Bob Riley (Ala.) would support McCain.

“It’s time to remove the 'presumptive' label before 'nominee,' ” Perdue told reporters.

Barbour and Perdue said their statement was not a call for former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, who won Georgia’s caucuses, to get out of the race. “Only he can make that decision,” Perdue said.

Huckabee also defeated McCain in Riley’s and Jindal’s states.

Barbour urged Republicans in states with upcoming Republican primaries, including Mississippi, which has a primary slated for March 11, to vote and rally behind the Arizona senator. Barbour said McCain will be the “clear choice” for both conservatives and moderates in November, since he will be facing a liberal Democrat. He also took shots at both Sens. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) and Barack Obama (D-Ill.)

Obama is “the most liberal candidate for United States president in the history of our country,” according to Barbour.

He added, “I don’t have to convince anyone how liberal Sen. Clinton is.”

Asked if conservatives have come around to the Arizona senator, Barbour said, “John McCain is not as conservative as Haley Barbour is.” But he called the idea that McCain will not win conservative support in November “hugely unlikely” and “wishful thinking by the news media.”

Barbour also dismissed the possibility of a McCain-Barbour ticket. “I’m on hurricane duty,” said Barbour, whose state is still recovering from the effects of Hurricane Katrina.

Here is confirmation that Gov. Sonny Perdue of Georgia endorsed John McCain today. The article below also says he was one of "six governors" who endorsed McCain today. But it does not mention the other five names. We had heard yesterday on Fox News that Gov. Haley Barbour of Mississippi would endorse McCain today. Developing . . . .

Washington — Gov. Sonny Perdue endorsed Sen. John McCain Monday, bypassing the candidate he most closely resembles politically, Mike Huckabee, for the last remaining Republican presidential challenger who could win in November.

In addition to this endorsement, Perdue and other top Georgia Republicans will host a fundraiser for McCain Thursday at the Westin Buckhead.

Perdue is one of six governors who endorsed McCain today. The group's jump into McCain's camp marks the latest shifts of the nation's Republican leadership to the Arizona Senator, despite conservative resistance to McCain, who is viewed as more moderate than Huckabee.

"John McCain is the leader America and our party needs at this point in our history," Perdue said in a statement prior to press conference.

"He has the experience and proven judgment to lead our nation and John's broad appeal will lift all Republicans running for office against stiff Democratic competition this November," Perdue said in his statement.

I just heard Molly Hennenberg on Fox News say that tomorrow, March 3, John McCain will be endorsed by Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour, and Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue. The endorsements will take place in Washington, D.C., even while McCain campaigns in Texas. Hennenberg reported this on Geraldo Rivera's program.

I might say that both Barbour and Perdue have been mentioned by some as possible Vice-Presidential picks.
