Tim Pawlenty

A new Survey USA poll in Minnesota shows John McCain only two points behind Barack Obama in what has been the bluest of blue states! Minnesota has voted for a Democrat in every election since 1972, and all but once since 1956.
47% Barack Obama
45% John McCain
This is why many believe that Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty as McCain's Vice-President could make the difference in taking Minnesota away from the Democrats. It's close already.

Rich Lowry at National Review Online is reporting that the McCain Campaign has been calling around the nation to state GOP officials to sound them out on what will happen if Sen. McCain chooses a pro-choice VP running mate. This would seem to indicate that Tom Ridge and Joe Lieberman are still in the running to be the pick, and even Condoleeza Rice , who describes herself as being "mildly pro-choice":
NR has learned that the McCain campaign has been calling key state GOP officials around the country the last couple of days and sounding them out about the consequences of a pro-choice VP pick. The campaign is asking about the reaction of conservative grass-roots activists to such a pick and whether a pro-choicer can be sold to them. This is an indication that the McCain campaign is serious about the possibility of a pro-choice VP nominee and that McCain leaving the door open to Tom Ridge last week may not have been merely a friendly nod to a longtime supporter. In this scenario, McCain's emphatic pro-life statements Saturday night and his pledge that he'll run a "pro-life administration" would have been partly an attempt to reassure conservatives in the event of a pro-choice pick. Here is NR's take today on why going with a pro-choicer would be a mistake for McCain.

In perhaps the most ridiculous claims yet from Obama supporters, Governor Tim Kaine (D) tells Fox News that Russia called for a ceasefire because Obama told them to.
“It was a bad crisis for the world. It required tough words but also a smart approach to call on the international community to step in. And I’m very, very happy that the Senator's request for a ceasefire has been complied with by President Medvedev.”
Notice he said, "It WAS a bad crisis..." The problem is it is still a crisis and not by any stretch of the imagination was Obama the first to call for a ceasefire.
When more than a thousand freedom loving American allys have been murdered by Russian troops, the Obama campaign tries to use it as a political issue to build Obama's foreign policy credentials.
The fact is, the fighting continues and even more Georgians are being slaughtered as I write.
John McCain was the first to condemn the Russians. He did so in strong terms and did not ask for appeasment as did Obama.

Contrast Kaine's statement to that of Gov. Pawlenty's measured response:
Jim Geraghty at The Campaign Spot is reporting that a source has told him that John McCain's VP list has narrowed down to two -- Tim Pawlenty and Mitt Romney:
The individual who told me yesterday that he had heard McCain's pick is coming soon, and that it was Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty, now tells me that McCain's list is down to Pawlenty or Mitt Romney.
I urge readers to take this with the requisite caution. Neither man's schedule has had any last-minute changes or cancellations, which to me is a leading sign of an announcement being lined up. Pawlenty is still scheduled to speak before the American Legislative Exchange Council tomorrow, and Romney is on vacation in New Hampshire until next week. (Or so the media is told.) He's also scheduled to attend the Olympics Opening Ceremonies in Beijing.)
Geraghty is very good, and I would take his source seriously. McCain may be getting close to a decision. Which do you think he should choose -- Pawlenty or Romney?
CNN Political Ticker is reporting that Sen. John McCain dropped a very strong hint yesterday about Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty that some are taking as evidence McCain may be moving Pawlenty's way as his VP pick:
It's VP tea leaf reading season, and a Republican source who attended a small private meeting with John McCain Tuesday in New Hampshire tells CNN that the GOP candidate dropped a serious hint about Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty.
The Republican source said "out of the blue" McCain told the gathering that he thinks they are "really going to like" Pawlenty.
This GOP source noted that McCain also said nice things about Mitt Romney, Mike Huckabee and Rudy Giuliani, but those appeared to be standard lines he says about former rivals.
This source said McCain may have been talking about Pawlenty because the meeting was with New Hampshire GOP delegates, and the Republican convention is in Pawlenty's state.
But this source said McCain's praise was effusive, and noteworthy because it appeared to come "totally out of left field."
Pawlenty is a long-time supporter of McCain's. He's from a swing state with considerable support across the Republican Party, including evangelicals, and has always been thought by Republican strategists to be on McCain's short list.
The Minnesota governor, who is visiting Washington, was at McCain headquarters in Virginia today for meetings, according to a McCain aide.
David Brody of CBN News interviews Gov. Tim Pawlenty. They discuss McCain's connection to evangelicals.(There is video in the link provided above)
Video: Governor Pawlenty on McCain’s Relationship with Evangelicals
June 30, 2008Minnesota Governor and Vice-Presidential shortlist candidate Tim Pawlenty entered The Brody File earlier this morning. We’ll be moving video excerpts throughout the afternoon. In the clip above, Pawlenty talks about how McCain still has some work to do with his Evangelical Christian outreach. Watch above and read the transcription below.
Governor Tim Pawlenty : "John McCain is a person of faith and he is a committed Christian and he is somebody that I think is probably less comfortable being overt about that than perhaps some others might be but his value system and his belief in Christ I think is something that is part of who he is as a person and I think he is somebody who would be well received by Christian leaders and Evangelical leaders and I just want to encourage the McCain campaign to make that effort and to reach out and they are but I think there are a lot of Christian leaders, evangelical leaders who haven’t yet been contacted or who haven’t been part of meetings who are feeling perhaps, are they going to reach out to me and at a minimum we want to make sure that he is speaking on issues of concern to them and I think you’ll see perhaps more of that in the summer and fall." read more »

The CBS News Horserace Blog has Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty moving into the top spot on their GOP VP rankings. They say the "buzz" surrounding Pawlenty has never been higher. They rank Florida Gov. Charlie Crist as No. 2 on the list, with Mitt Romney, Bobby Jindal and Rob Portman rounding out the top five. You can go here for the entire Top 10.

On yesterday's "Chris Matthews Show," Andrew Sullivan predicted that Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty will be John McCain's choice for Vice-President. Sullivan apparently correctly predicted last year that both John McCain and Barack Obama would be the nominees for President.
