John McCain Ignores James Dobson.
Here is story posted at Newsmax.com that discusses John McCain's refusal to meet with Dr. James Dobson. Dobson is a powerful evangelical leader based in Colorado and is very well known in poilitical circles.
The Newsmax story quotes Bob Novak in several instances as in the following:
Noting that Dobson has indicated he can't support McCain for president, Novak writes that Dobson's opposition to McCain "reflects continued resistance to the prospective presidential nominee among Christian conservatives who are unhappy with McCain's current positions on stem-cell research, immigration and global warming, not to mention his past sponsorship of campaign-finance reform."
But conservatives are surprised that despite the differences between McCain and some key conservatives, he hasn't responded to their olive branches and sought meetings.
Novak is too kind. Dobson has not just said he could not support McCain for president. He has voiced that opinion in much stronger terms.
In a Worldnetdaily article back in January Dosbson said:
...Speaking as a private individual, I would not vote for John McCain under any circumstances...
He went on to say:
...That came from McCain, and the McCain Feingold Bill kept us from telling the truth right before elections … and there are a lot of other things. He's not in favor of traditional marriage, and I pray that we won't get stuck with him," Dobson said...
Why would McCain want to meet with someone who has made it clear that he could not give his support to McCain. It would be a waste of time. Dobson's followers know Dobson's opinion of McCain and their minds have been made up since January. I'm not saying they all agree with Dobson, I'm saying they know how HE feels about McCain.

I had heard that Dobson
had softened a bit toward McCain in the last few weeks. Many people do follow Dobson's lead with their votes, so I hope a cordial relationship can develop between the two. Maybe a meeting would help. I think that most conservatives (including Dobson) would prefer McCain over Obama. Frankly, I don't see Dobson sitting at home in November. I wonder if Dobson is just not playing coy to get a little more of what he wants on the issues.
McCain Should Definitely Meet with Dobson
I am surprised to hear that Senator McCain is declining the chance to meet with Dobson & talk about their differences. Maybe he does not want to give the guy any more stature than he has - or draw attention to evangelicals who are not warming to him yet, but it is foolish to act like the problem will just go away. McCain should demonstrate that he takes their concerns seriously by meeting with a Dr. Dobson, hearing him out and sharing why he supports stem cell research in a personal way. Talk about Moe Udall having died of Parkisons disease- talk about what he tried to accomplish/ is accomplishing with campaign finance.
If Dobson is softening and open to finding common ground, McCain should embrace that opportunity!
I disagree. No meeting with
I disagree. No meeting with Herr Dobson. The Jurassic Mr. Dobson can support Bob Barr and be damned (to paraphrase what the Duke of Wellington once said, when told by a blackmailer that if he did not pay, the blackmailer would publish a book of scandal about him. "Publish and be damned," said the Duke)
What is so bad about Dobson?
Obviously it is annoying that Dobson has been so anti-McCain, but it sounds as though he is softening and ready to talk reasonably- why not try and find some common ground?
After all, this is not Ahmadinejad.
Herr Doctor James Dobson
Woulda, Shoulda, Coulda... I also recall Herr Doctors assault and refusal to vote for Fred Thompson. The "evangelicals" went for Huckabee, those of us that put CONSERVATISM before religion refused to do so. The democrats are now made up of a very large group of "minority interests", and we must now realize that if we want to succeed, we are going to have to follow the SAME model in presidential elections.
The social conservatives can't go it alone... any more than the fiscal, defense, or constitutional conservatives can. From this point on forward. We are going to have to SIT DOWN and come together in the future, BEFORE IOWA.
not sure that I WANT to come
not sure that I WANT to come together with the "social conservatives." VERY sure that I do not want government making private life and moral decisions for me and my family. Such issues are fine in a church but they have NO place -- NONE, NADA -- in a free government. Terry Schiavo -- I think that that affair was just about enough "social conservatism" for me for sixteen lifetimes.
"not sure that I WANT to"
Yeah, so what? I am probably a lot like you. On Terry Schiavo, on Elian Gonzalez, and probably on abortion too. So what? Whats your take on the abduction of 460 children from the "YFZ compound?"
We draw lines in the sand, the ones we refuse to cross because of certain individual issues, that cost us the bigger picture overall, are the ones we should pay less attention to. Few of us would agree on all issues, however our enemy, a collection of many minority interests, seems to be better organized and aligned than we are.
Was Rush Right?
I said that in the future, we are going to need to come together, before Iowa. If the positions of the likes of Dr. Dobson, who refuse to accept any candidate short of JESUS, and the likes of Mr. Mass Mouth, who refuses to acknowledge the IMPORTANCE of satisfying our social conservative allies issues are going to be the norm, henceforth, Maybe Rush WAS right, maybe this IS THE END of the republican party as we knew it.
I think it is. All three
I think it is. All three candidates agree, more or less, that private, family, moral issues are decisions for individuals and families -- not the government -- to make. (Exceptions: child abuse (the Texas Mormons are a case in point) and actual, criminal violence.) We are back to what Barry Goldwater, the ORIGINAL "Conservative," advocated. It took 44 years to get here but yes, we are here now. The Republican party returns to its FREEDOM roots.
