Experience Matters

I had a professor once who had served in the armed forces. He told us about boot camp, and he said that one of the reasons that boot camp was necessary was so that the new members of the military would experience how hard it was to be on the bottom in terms of authority. Then, when they obtained a position of authority, they wouldn't abuse that authority, because they knew what it was like to be on the bottom. They would be great leaders because they already knew what it was like to be the ones being led.

John McCain has the experience to be a leader. He has served in the military, giving him the experience needed to be Commander in Chief. He showed throughout his military career that he would, as his campaign has stated, put his "country first." He remained as a prisoner in VietNam when he could have had an earlier release because he knew that it was the right thing to do, and to do otherwise would demoralize those around him who had been held prisoner longer. He knows what it means to be at war. He knows what it means to have a son at war. He knows what it means to lose your freedom. When he takes this experience and knowledge to the White House, he will be able to make wise decisions for the military, and will do so carefully, because he has been there. He has already shown that he will be a great leader strategically, as evidenced by his support of the surge, which resulted in success in Iraq.

John McCain has also had enough experience in office to let us know where he stands on issues. He has shown that even when his views and positions are not popular with his own party, that he will stand strong in what he believes. He will keep his word, as evidenced by the fact that he stayed with public financing for his campaign after agreeing to do so. He has chosen as his running mate someone who shares his views on the importance of life. He stands strong in support of the Second Amendment, the right to bear arms. He has shown through his actions that he supports the right to freedom of speech, and has not cut off television stations because their anchors have asked difficult questions, and neither he nor his supporters have done any digging into the personal records of those who have displeased him in an effort to punish those who question his policies. He loves America, with its freedoms and its Constitution. He wants to maintain the freedom we have while improving our economic situation, and while it will be difficult to overcome our economic problems, I have no doubt that he will do so in a way that is beneficial to the system that has served us well, instead of trying to change and destroy it.

Because John McCain has had so much experience, we can trust him to do what is best for our country, while maintaining the freedoms for us that once were denied him while he served our country. He understands how great America is, and this appreciation will allow him to keep that which is great about it, while working with wisdom to take care of things that need work, like the economy. He has shown through his experience that he is a man of integrity who can be trusted to make wise decisions--and he has shown that he does not consider wisdom to be bipartisan, as he has reached across the aisle to get things done on behalf of the United States of America.

John McCain is the change we need. Whether you are a Republican, Democrat, or Independent, please put your country first, and decide who has our best interests at heart, and who is better able to keep safe the liberties and freedoms we hold dear.

Because experience matters, I'm voting for John McCain.

Please go and vote--every vote counts, and it is a right that many people have fought to keep safe for us. Tomorrow's the day--vote John McCain.

Imagine if John McCain had whispered somewhere that he was willing to bankrupt a major industry? Would this declaration not immediately be front page news? Well, Barack Obama actually flat out told the San Francisco Chronicle (SF Gate) that he was willing to see the coal industry go bankrupt in a January 17, 2008 interview. The result? Nothing.
