Ramblings

This is my first blog post. I'm sure I am a conservative.
I voted for Reagan, Bush, Perot (ooops), Dole, Bush, Bush (the alternative sucked). I was a registered Republican until early 2007.
I know Bush is doing exactly what he said he was going to do but I think he should have been more flexible. I don't mean with Democrats, but his approach in general. He's history, so no point in in discussing him.
Here's how I see things now:
Obama as president, especially with both houses is a big mistake.
I was supporting Fred until he fizzled. I wasn't going to vote this year, I was losing interest in politics.
Palin changed that. I didn't know much about her other than she was republican, attractive and well spoken. Her acceptance speech was awesome, maybe just a little snarky at times. I can't wait to see her speaking off the cuff. I hope she does as well. Eye contact with the camera in healthy doses. Gretas' show doesn't count. Doesn't hurt either.
Her record as a mayor and governor sounds great, with a few caveats. One I caught was John's appearance where he referred to Sarah and the jet. She put it on ebay, not sold. As to making a profit, not so much. Murkowsi paid around 2.6 million, it was sold for 2.1. He may have paid too much for it, but simple math equals a loss, Even if you are cutting your losses.

Separate note about campaign appearances:
It looks a little creepy at the joint appearances. Neither one should be in the shot while the other is speaking.

Roe v Wade

I am pro-life except in the case of criminals. I have 2 teenage daughters. The media coverage of the baby stories is disgusting. That goes for you too, Fox News.
This is how I want to see the overturning question answered.

Plessy v. Ferguson ... (the case on which segration's constitutionality was based) ... Was handed down in a 7-1 decision, and remained the law of the land for 58 years ... personally, I'm glad the Supreme Court saw fit to overturn that injustice.

If you check abortion laws across the world, they were determined politically by the people. As a result, many seemingly more liberal nations have laws that are more restrictive of abortion (though it is still permitted at the very early periods). This is because the people were trusted with this decision.

The pro-choice movement has spread fear that the overturn of Roe v. Wade would result in the ban of abortions. That's just not true. The people would have the opportunity to speak and determine what is best for their communities, their wives, their sisters, their daughters and themselves.
Overturning Roe vs. Wade does not make abortion illegal. It simply returns the issue to the states to decide for themselves what is appropriate regulation. Given public opinion, some states may most likely it illegal (with exceptions for rape, incest and the mother's health), most states would most likely keep it legal but limit it to the first 6 or 12 weeks (a regulation not permitted under Roe), and some states like New York and California would most likely keep the same liberal abortion laws they already have.

You are right it is a tragedy that thousands of women died from botched abortions, and states that make abortion illegal should take the next step to provide resources and services for young women who would otherwise choose a abortion.

However, you are also ignoring the point that there have been 48,000,000 abortions (according to the Alan Guttmacher Institute) since Roe. Should these be completely ignored?

Finally, the problem with your final premise "trusting women to make the right decision for them" ... is that philosophically, the TRUTH of whether a child at 6 weeks is a life does not change based on the circumstances of the mother. Either it is a life or it isn't. The fact that one woman desperately wants that child ... while another doesn't ... does not change the truth whatever it may be. Thus, as a democratic society, we have a duty to make those hard decisions. Unfortunately, the Supreme Court in Roe took away the right of the people to act in the several states.

Enough said.

Energy and climate change

The climate probably is changing. I don't think man is the primary cause.
Something has to be done about the oil situation. Drilling will provide at the very least, a psychological benefit. I like what I hear from T. Boone Pickens. Would he be energy secretary? Should John adopt that plan?
I know it's got drawbacks. Natural gas for transportation is a great idea, especially with the ability to convert current vehicles over to it. Natural gas is a great topic considering the new pipeline in Alaska.
We need to "encourage" oil companies to install CNG pumps at all branded (not just owned) stations within the next 10 years. All government owned vehicles should be CNG. Incentives should be given to convert vehicles to CNG.
Push nuclear energy. Push wind power. Push solar. Give specifics now.
