Supreme Court: If there was ever any doubt on why to vote for McCain

Greetings all, I apologize for the recent hiatus -- I've been busy becoming engaged (I'm a lucky guy) and therefore haven't had time to post recently.

However, recent Supreme Court rulings have brought me out. Despite George W. Bush having appointed Roberts and Alito, it is increasingly apparent that the Supreme Court is increasingly liberal, with Anthony Kennedy slowly drifting left.

The two most glaring examples of this were in the GITMO decision and in today's decision regarding the death penalty being applied to child rape cases.

While Barack Obama is paying lip service to the cause of being against the court's ruling today, he did support the GITMO rulling and there is no doubt he would appoint very liberal justices in the old of Ginsburg. Heck, Bill Clinton was a political animal as much as anything, and HE appointed Ginsburg and Breyer, so what would an openly avowed liberal like Obama do? It's very scary, especially given the U.S. Senate is going to be a 54/46 or 55/45 split if current trends continue.

To me, this is the issue that should get social conservatives off their butts in support of John McCain. If fighting the war against terror wasn't enough, then this should be. Yeah, McCain may not exactly be marching in pro life rallies and going to social conservative events all the time, but the man has a pro life record and you could argue without him we wouldn't have Roberts and Alito, depending on how you argue the Gang of 14 debate.

Imagine this scenario for a moment. Sometime in 2009, John Stevens, who is in his 80's, gets ill and has to resign from the court. Many issues before our country and world are in the balance -- GITMO, the death penalty, Roe v. Wade, eminent domain. Who would you want?

John McCain might appoint someone like Diane Sykes, an attractive conservative, pro-life appeals judge out of Wisconsin. Barack Obama? Someone like Sonia Sotamayor, a liberal judge out of the 2nd circuit.

The recent rulings out of the court -- hopefully the 2nd amendment one tomorrow goes against his trend -- put into light the #2 issue, behind the war, of why conservatives must put aside their primary quabbles and go out and work for Senator John McCain.

Supreme Court Justices

Obama would select from the 9th circuit COA without a doubt.

Sorry, but I support both of

Sorry, but I support both of these Supreme Court decisions, especially today's child rape decision.

The last thing a FREEDOM America needs is for a Supreme Court that imposes draconian punishments and denies habeas corpus to detainees. Granted that the detainees in question are aserted to be enemy combatants; fact is, many of them ARE NOT such. As for the child rape case, there should NOT BE a death penalty -- for obvious reasons beginning with the rush to judgment that always occurs in emotionally charged crime cases to prosecutions (and police) overriding people's rights in an attempt to find a suspect -- guilty or not -- to indict to satisfy a public outcry. NO WAY, mate. That day is OVER in America.

As for Alito especially, he's been an awful choice. As bad as Clarence Thomas. Give me Sandra Day O'Connor any day.

I agree with one decision and disagree with the other

I do agree with the decision that they should have trails and if they are convicted then they should be punished by our courts and sent to our Prisons. Even if they stay on Gitmo. I do think The United States should make sure we are protected.
I disagreed with the child rape death penality case. I think that was a terrible decision. I think that if you rape a child you deserve to be put to death.

Raping a child....

Did you see that Mass legislator--a defense attorney--describe what he'd do to a child who is called to testify against a pedophile? When my children we small, I let it be known to ANYONE in whose care I had to put them, that if anyone touched my kid, it would be me in jail because I'd never let the legal system have a chance to coddle and free the scum. I have more respect for a hit man from the mob than I have for a child abuser. We can only hope that the sub-human creeps who were sitting in their own cells on death row will be put in the general prison community and that their fellow prisoners "adopt" them as their personal toy.

Exactly my point about the

Exactly my point about the emotionalism that arises from shocking crimes and which so often overrides the law. We do not, hopefully, live in a Revenge Society, and we cannot give in to those barbaric impulses which do indeed inhabit us. Too often those charged with a crime -- especially an outrageous one -- are railroaded into conviction because society wants somebody's head, and quickly. That is Lynch law. And by the way, if you think that life in prison is "getting off easy," just try living it. Myself, I am for rehabilitation. People CAN be reborn. That is why we call prisons "penitentiaries." In them one hopefully does penance,. And penance should admit the possibility of forgiveness. It is forgiveness that allows a civilized society to MOVE ON BEYOND the cycle of crime and punishment.

Actually, much evidence suggests otherwise..

That pedophiles are very hard to be "reborn". Plus, it's not about revenge, it's about punishment, and to me death just must be on the table. The idea that you would let rapists of 3 year olds live is pretty sad.
